why is ceramic used to make mugs,vases,and cups?

    If it ain't broke don't fix it. 

    This is a centuries old, time proven, world wide method.

    Other materials are used as well. 

    Ceramics/clay is a fantastic material.  In the hands of a skilled practitioner (with virtually no equipment other than basic tools and a kiln) anything can be made.  It’s cheap and plentiful and has excellent properties.  It can be produced and decorated in many ways.  And has been discovered a pot/receptacle can remain in tact for thousands of years, and still be functional.  It doesn’t degrade

    Clay, like glass, is wonderfully plastic - that is, it can be molded into any shape whatsoever. Moreover, both are very durable - properly fired clay will last for thousands of years, the same with glass. Clay and sand are very inexpensive ingredients.
