How common is osteoarthritis under age 40?
Assume the following:
- Healthy weight
- Frequent exercise (both weights and cardio, and occasional yoga)
- Moderately healthy diet
- No other physical health problems
- No family history of osteoarthritis or major joint problems
How likely is it given these circumstances to have osteoarthritis?
Also, can osteoarthritis show up on X-rays?
Thank you both for your answers so far. Good info. Can you elaborate on whether OA shows up on X-rays in early stages too?

It can happen if there is a history of trauma in the area. Its not common under 40 but not unheard of. Ive seen it in the late 20s. Xray is the diagnostic tool of choice for OA.
Yes. A radiologist or any doctor can read a film to see the signs of OA from early to advanced. Thats part of our training!

It always shows up on X-rays. I am female and my knees were shot in my late 30s. More unusual for males though.
