There are many different types of Buddhists, and they are not all the same. The Tibetan form of Buddhism is not the same as Zen, which is not the same as the form in Thailand or Burma. Their styles of living are not the same, either. Monastics, both nuns and monks, usually have quite an austere life (depending upon which school they follow). Typically, monastics eat no later than 12 noon each day, they live in monasteries with simple accommodations, and do not get married or have sexual relations (this is not always the case for Japanese monastics). In addition, they are forbidden to kill anything, even mosquitoes or other insects.
Buddhists who are not monastics can eat three meals at the regular times, can get married and have normal relations, and in other ways can live normally. However, they should still not be killing any animals or insects.
Many Buddhists, both monastics and non-monastics, spend a significant amount of time meditating and studying. They seek to find the truth behind suffering in life and, over time, find that they suffer much less. Eventually, with significant meditation practice, they may reach full enlightenment, and then all suffering is over.
Hope this helps!

I worked with a guy who was Buddhist once. He was always volunteering to donate some blood products, so, he was often tired at work! I think he did it a bit too much, but, he felt it was important, as he had a rare product that was in high demand. And, in Canada, people are not paid for blood donations at all.

Buddhist are more concerned with their enlightenment and elevation than that of others. The more they suffer, the more enlightenment. Then - why are there happy Bhuddists?
