Why is the Tampa Bay Rays team a wild-card team when it has the best AL record and AL East record?

Wild-card series: Toronto Blue Jays vs. Tampa Bay Rays.

Wild card (sports): A tournament or playoff place awarded to an individual or team that has not qualified through normal play.

In what way did the Tampa Rays team did not qualify through normal play, when it's the division winner and has the best record in the AL?

There are no byes during the first round of the playoffs this year, so every team that qualified is playing in the 'wild card' round which is nothing more than a branding term.

Even being the top team in the east they get little respect because there is no big media machine, drama surrounding them.I hope they win it all. They crushed the Jays without getting up a sweat.

Your understanding is incorrect.  In the NFL, the two division winners in each conference with the best overall records get a bye the first week, while the other two division winners play the two wild card teams. This does NOT make those division winners wild card teams.

The pandemic caused a reset this year of MLBs playoff format. Instead of the two wild card teams in each league playing each other for the right to enter the Divisional Series games with the three division winners, each division provides two teams - first and second place, for a total of six teams, with the two wild card teams making eight. All teams are then seeded 1 thru 8, with the wild card teams slotted at nos. 7 and 8.

In the AL, Tampa is the #1 seed. They eliminated #8, wild card Toronto, 2 games to zero in the best of 3 series. The other AL wild card is Chicago, who is tied with #2 seed Oakland 1-1.

It's not a wildcard, but with 8 teams playing from each league, there are no byes.

Its not.  All the teams are playing in the wild card round.

Tampa is the number 1 seed as division winner.  They are playing a wild card entrant, the Jays.  Tampa is not a wild card team.

They aren't a wild card team, but all teams no matter their seed play in the wildcard round on this short season playoff format.

Normal play in MLB is a 162 game season.  Did they win the division over a normal 162 game season?

The Rays are not a wild card team.  The Rays are the American League Eastern Division champions.  The Rays have the best record of the three division champs, which makes the Rays the #1 seed in the playoffs.  The #1 seed plays the #8 seed (Bluejays) in the first round, best of 3.
