Can a .177 rifle kill a rat?

I mean a big rat.  About the same "size" as a Rabbit.   can a .177 pellet gun kill a rat that big with 900 fps of pellet speed?

515fps(at impact) using an 8.5gr pellet is sufficient.

Yeah, from 15-20 yards it should put a quick end to a rats life. But like B Bean said, rats don't sit still for long. If they're using a hole, sit there and concentrate on the hole thru the scope, as soon as you see it, squeeze the trigger. Shoot safe, and good luck!

Yes rats are very easy to kill

I’ve actually taken out rabbits using bb’s, so a pellet should work

For Homer Bufflekill......a picture of a squirrel size rat!!!!

Either you have very large rats or very small rabbits for comparison. I posted a picture of a rat the size of a squirrel a couple of years ago and can produce a picture today. Can you???

I used .22 Federal lead shot.

You post your rabbit-sized rat and I`ll post my squirrel-sized rat.

That gate post is over 8 inches in diameter.

Pardon the pun but that sounds like overkill.

Have you tried traps or calling pest control ?

    Use glue traps for them.

Yes, I use one all the time. Mine is a simple Crosman 760 pump. As "Skeptik" says I once used it to "sting" a Rabbit 100 yards away in my Dad's garden. Just wanted it to stop eating the garden and leave. Only 3 pumps NOT 10, The Rabbit flipped in the air and laid there. Not dead, and I have only one Idea what happened. The BB NOT a pellet must have entered the ear. Had to get  a.22 long rifle to finish it. I was really sorry for that experience, I did not mean to really hurt the Rabbit.

SO yes, PLEASE keep in mind, if you shoot something you are doing something very dangerous to the target's well being.

I once killed a rabbit with one, so I don't see why not.

You just need to hit it in a soft enough spot to penetrate.
