What was the first anime to do the "if you die in the game you die in real life"?

The farthest back i can trace it is hunter x hunter in the greed island arch, then a year after that sword art online did it, but was there any before hxh?

I believe dot hack did the same sort of thing, characters trapped in an mmo and fall into a coma in real life, and if they die in the game they die in real life. That series started in 2002, both the video games and anime. This isn’t a new idea tho, there are plenty of series from the last 100 years where characters play a game that can really kill them, Jumanji is one, the dungeons and dragons cartoon from the 80s where kids are transported into the game is another. But the first anime to use the idea of MMOs having real world death is dot hack.

FYI, the greed island arc was first adapted in 2003, in an OVA series for the first adaptation of the HxH manga. That's 6 years before even the LN for SAO first came out, let alone the anime.
