how can cinnabar be identified when it is NOT in its pristine crystalline form?

cinnabar comes in a few different forms and textures, the most iconic and rare being that which resembles gemstones or quartz, however there is an abundance of specamines that look more like clay or brick than crystal..... how can cinnabar be identified and not be confused or mistaken with other red rocks
