Mainly because Akio Morita is not available (he died in 1999) to run it any more.

Mostly because of their bad decisions in the smartphone market.
Firstly, their naming scheme.
Their phones went from Xperia X10 to Xperia S, then T, then Z. This is a quite confusing lineup of phones because we don’t know which one is better than which. It’s just random letters from the alphabet.
Then came the Z1, Z2, Z3, Z3+, and then Z5 (skipping the Z4, which in itself would be a strange move). So we kind of see a pattern now, but then came the Xperia XZ.
Then they did XZ for a few years: XZ1, XZ2, XZ3, and then after that came the Xperia 10.
Then they dropped a SUPERIOR phone called the Xperia 1. Now I’m pretty sure a phone called the ‘10’ would seem better than a phone called the ‘1’, but no. To this day, Sony still doesn’t know how to name phones. They recently released the Xperia 1 ii, (Pronounced Xperia One mark Two, but I still think it was pretty funny). I have no idea why they didn’t just call it the Xperia 2. But it didn’t really matter. At that point, Sony was pretty much already dead.

Remember the magnitude 8.9 earthquake and the ensuing tsunami that hit Northern Japan in 2011? Sony's factory was destroyed. They never seem to have recovered completely after that.

I think its a perception problem that's been enhanced and perpetuated by Sony's marketing and long term survival strategy. Sony could probably outdo every electronics company in the industry in most categories and price ranges... But Sony has a fear of being tagged as a bully...Marketing people with in Sony feel this would lead to Sony's demise to go forward with too aggressive of a strategy...In areas where the marketing people feel Sony can excel with public acceptance they are allowed to do so cautiously. So Sony tries to make product that's just as good as the competition but also no better...It's a long term marketing strategy thats seen as the best way to survive over the long haul. Sony is no longer run by technological innovation but by market strategy...

Heaps of different brands, and brand comebacks. Like Siemens they made a comeback. Apple wasn't as big back in the day now leading the market. All changes every decade

New companies have come in offering comparable products at lower costs such as Samsung, LG, etc.
Sony still makes good high end OLED TVs and of course their PlayStation brand is stronger than ever, but otherwise their stuff isn't much better than the competition and usually more expensive because of the brand name.

Sony equipment was always overpriced and they refused to allow discounting by other retail stores for a long time.
