# How many ions are in 15g of ammonium carbonate((NH4)2CO3)?

How do you calculate this? Please explain it to me.

First, determine moles: divide 15 g by the molecular weight of (NH4)2CO3. This is about 96 g/mole.

Now, to get ions, work out the ionization equation:

(NH4)2CO3 --> 2NH4+ + CO3-2

So, for every mole of the compound, you produce three moles of ions

(15 g (NH4)2CO3) / (96.0858 g (NH4)2CO3/mol) ×

(3 mol ions / 1 mol (NH4)2CO3) × (6.022 × 10^23 ions/mol) = 2.8 × 10^23 ions
