Ceiling fan is making grinding sound. Only on high setting, I took off the blades and still grinds! Took off housing and the grinding stops?

Probably has worn out bearings unless something is rubbing against the housing. Have it inspected by an OBGYN.

if you can't locate the actual area where the noise comes from, buy a new fan

You have a mud dabber nest on the rotating part inside the fan housing that is rubbing on the housing. Put it back together and rotate it and you will find if rubs on every rotation of the fan blades.  Look and you will see where it is rubbing.  We have some on the front porch and in the past the mud dabbers have gotten up inside them and caused a rubbing sound.

The grinding is happening on ALL settings except OFF. You just only hear it on high.

If removing the housing gets rid of the sound, something is grinding against the housing and you need to find out what.

must have been grinding on the housing

any telltale scratching on the inside of it?
