What do the numbers in a court case represent?

For instance, in Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, 347 U.S. 483, what does "347 U.S. 483" represent?

It's where the decision is officially published. That means page 483 of volume 347 of United States reports, which is the official record of the Supreme Court.

That is the filing system. We have the internet now, but before those days they needed a way to locate a published decision. Think of it as doing the same thing as the Dewey Decimal system the library uses.
