why do astronomers immediately presume they've found life in the cosmos every time they detect water or some common molecule off earth?

It is a sign that astronomy has reached it's limits. What we are now entering is the age of astronomy as an ironic science: in other words the science you are doing when you are not doing science. Real science starts with the data then asks what conclusions we can draw from it. Ironic science starts from an immovable belief, such as the sure-fire, water-tight, dinky-do belief that life must surely exist up in space, then twists the data to support that belief. And heck, if all else fails and there is no data, then that inconvenience is solved by a conspiracy theory that the gubberment must be keeping information from us.

And so, we have descended to the point where every puff of water vapor or every whiff of methane up in the heavens somewhere sets off a Mexican Wave amongst the believers who readily convince themselves they have yet more compelling evidence that Mr Boogieman from Outer Space is alive and well and about to knock on our door.

    Sad really.

That's sort of asking, why do you go to your bank to get some cash, because that's were the money is, same thing, wherever there is water, there will be life.

Why do people with a grade 4 understanding and things assume they can understand what a smart person does blame the media

Uh... they don't. They simply state life is a possibility, because so far all life observed has one common denominator: water.

They do not do this. Instead the media, people like you and ReductioAdAstronomicus falsely claim they do.

Grasping at some very long and slender straws.  No evidence of life outside of low Earth orbit.

They don't. And the media doesn't either. Read the articles.

They don't.  But people like you and the media do.  It makes for better press.

  • Because finding alien life would be like the biggest news story of all time, you gotta expect that people are gonna get excited when they find something that indicates the presence of life outside of Earth. Of course the media always jazzes the story up to make it sound like its a definite thing.

They don't. No actual scientists think they found life. Only the media says that. They exaggerate facts to attract attention.
