Start by going to the source of the brand of politics you want to learn about, key political figures, web sites and such. See what they care about. Then, using your best judgement tune in to selected political commentary shows on TV or radio that talk about political issues. Pay attention to the language used. Is it rational and more or less objective (there's nothing wrong with passionate though) or is it reactionary, angry and full of vitriol, empty hyperbole and rhetoric.

You might make a list of certain issues and listen for the pros and cons of them. Make your own question and see who gives you the most honest answers to them, if at all. Sometimes the lack of answers is telling in itself. Search online yourself too.

It's often easy to want to believe a certain point of view, but that doesn't mean it's honest and objective. That's key. Good luck in your journey of discovery and it is a journey not a destination! No one political philosophy has all the right answers.

We have two political teams.  People choose one team or the other based on about 2 or 3 social wedge issues and then spend the rest of their days arguing on the internet and retweeting memes.

Candidates are motivated to become elected officials. Once in office, they will do whatever it takes to stay in office.  They will tell lies about their opponents, They will lie about their activities, they will change positions to please the populace, they will vote against their values to conform to party leadership.  Understand this, and you will have a solid grasp of politics.

Republicans have morals and principles. Democrats have none of these. Their policies are based on what's trending now with millennials. If millennials are holding signs to defund the police then they are defunding the police without thinking about the consequences of their actions. Just knee-jerk, feel-good policies.
