Probably because the selfie camera has a very wide-angle lens in order to be able to photograph you and a decent amount of background.

For good pictures of a person - head and shoulders - the camera must be at least 5 feet (1.5 metres) from the face.

Possibly because you use a wide angle lens when doing a selfie, and the wide angle lens distorts your face, changes its shape, stretching it near the edges of the photo. It is a well known trick in photography that you can make a face look comical with an extreme wide angle lens, making the nose of a dog or a person look comically large compared to the rest of the face for example.  People buy selfie sticks to try to reduce the distortion by moving the lens away from the face. Moving the camera away would reduce the size of the face however unless you can increase the focal length of the lens.

It's because of the lens in your smartphone which is the worst type of lens to use for taking pictures of people.  Your smartphone uses a wide-angle lens of about 24mm to 28mm in focal length (in 35mm or full-frame format) which are normally designed for landscapes.  These short lenses produce a lot of distortion that makes people's faces look distorted, out of proportion and downright ugly at times.  This distortion gets stronger as the lens gets closer to the subject such as when taking a selfie.

Here's a link showing how the focal length can make an otherwise attractive woman look uglier as the focal length decreases, but more attractive as it increases: http://www.stepheneastwood.com/tutorials/lensdisto...

If you don't want to look ugly in photos, stop having your photo taken with a wide-angle lens.  Instead of a phone, get a digital camera with a zoom.  Hand the camera off to some and have them step back 10' or so, oom the lens out and have them take your photo.  Doing it this way will not only remove the distortion that makes you look ugly in photos, but it'll actually flatten the perspective making your look more attractive than you normally do.

Of course, another option would be to upgrade your phone to one that has three different lenses and only use the strongest one when taking photos of 1-3 people.  But if you get a actual digital camera, your image quality will be significantly better.

Move the selfie camera ten feet away and see what happens.
