Were the olmecs and the mayans different ethnic groups?

For example: different LANGUAGE and NATIONAL RELIGION are indicators of different ethnic groups.

Seems highly probable looking at the images they left behind. The Olmec sculptures left by them have almost African features. I suppose it is possible that they were stylistic interpretations and not a likeness of their own features, but there are so many of them. I know there are plenty of Mayan burial remains that can be used to see what they looked like and how their relatives are still around today, but I cannot remember any reference to Olmec burials. I know they are older, but they must exist and that would give a real answer to your question. Right, I am off to google this and see if there are any.

Yes, that's why they are classified as two separate groups. This has nothing to do with religon and spirituality.
