Chrome Memory Usage?

Google Chrome using tons of memory is obviously nothing new to anybody, but after I booted up my laptop earlier this week it started using much more memory than before. Leaving a playlist open on Youtube for a few hours would normally take up anywhere from 100 to 300 megabytes, but today I had one using up almost 2.5 gigabytes. Plenty of other sites that I use frequently are also coming back with these absurd numbers. I noticed that there was a Chrome update available when I turned off my computer the last time and it likely applied the update when I shut it off, but I can't imagine an update would have this dramatic an impact on resource consumption. What could be the cause for this change and what are things I can do about it?
