Depends on the country you live in learning American Literature will be Useless in the UK because Americans don't speak English

I would never dream of saying anything so sweeping and subjective.

What's "English Literature"? Wouldn't "English Literature" include any work written in English? Perhaps what you meant was "British Literature." Unless you have some bizarre reason for wanting to single out writers from England and discount those from Scotland, Wales, and a part of Ireland, then the simplest explanation is that you're one of those total and complete buffoons who doesn't know the difference between "England", "Britain", and "the UK."

Which is better is purely subjective.  Both American and English literature have masterpieces as well as literary crap.
