was the Tower of Babel actually some sorta portal to get to other planets?

I was thinking about the Tower of Babel and why it would be so significant that God would had prevent it from being made. We made higher towers today, but there was a reason why God prevented the Tower of Babel from being completed.

Do you think it was a portal to other planets?

    No.

    2)  I was thinking about the Tower of Babel and why it would be so significant that God would had prevent it from being made.

It's because of WHY it was being made.

It was being made so that the makers could invade Heaven, the dwelling place of God.

SO: what mattered is not that it could have succeeded

    - it couldn't

but, rather, the rather thoroughly malicious and disrespectful (toward God) intent of the project

The story is just a myth or fable.

No. About a year after the Flood began, Shem and his family came out of the ark onto dry land. All bad people were gone, but that soon changed. Canaan, the son of Shem’s brother Ham, did something so bad that Noah said: “Cursed be Canaan.” Nimrod, a grandson of Ham, was bad too. He opposed the true God, Jehovah, and told people to build a high tower called Babel to make a name for themselves. How do you think this made Shem and his father feel?—Genesis 9:25; 10:6-10; 11:4, 5.

They were sad, and Jehovah was too. Do you know what Jehovah did?— He confused the language of people so that they could not understand one another. Then the people had to stop building and go to different places with those who spoke the same language. (Genesis 11:6-9) But God did not change the language of Shem and his family. So they could stay close to one another and help one another serve God. Have you ever thought about how long Shem served Jehovah?

THERE WAS A REASON YHVH GOD  CONFUSED THE LANGUAGES. WHATEVER THEY WERE DOING;   GOD SAID IN

GENESIS 11:6 "THE PEOPLE ARE ONE AND THE LANGUAGE IS ONE, AND THIS THEY BEGIN TO DO: NOW NOTHING WILL BE RESTRAINED FROM THEM, WHICH THEY HAVE IMAGINED TO DO." WHAT EVER THEY WERE TRYING TO BUILD AND DO WAS ON DANGEROUS GROUND AND A DANGER TO ALL, SO IT WAS STOPPED BY CONFUSING THE LANGUAGE SO THEY COULD NOT CONTINUE.

He told them to scatter and fill the earth.  When you have them collecting in a city with a supreme ruler who thinks he is above the law.  Bad things happen to good people.  Why he caused the flood, and brought the water canapy above the earth down to the earth.  Causing most of it to be covered in water.  ripping continients apart.  So people could get away from a vicious ruler.  They did just that during the rein of China Gingus Kong.  Knowing they were scheduled to die.  For insulting the king.  They got into boats and set sail away from the main land.  With storms and maybe God's hand in the matter they came to the Hawaiian Islands.  Before the whole earth was a tropical paradise.  So it was a perfect set up to have cruel rulers.  Now we could get away.  Something they said, "let us make a celebrated name for ourselves."  In other words become rulers.

Hebrew travellers to the east came across ziggerauts in Assyria and didn't know what they were.  They assumed they were the bases of towers that were never completed.  The story of the abandoned tower became part of Hebrew folklore.  When this was written down by the scribes of the priestly class, they involved God in the story.

The simplest answers that require the least assumptions tend to be more likely true.

The tower of Babel is a myth.
