Better traction (more weight over the drive wheels) and reduced rotational intertia. Hold a hammer by the lighter end (handle) and make the heavy end change direction. Then hold the hammer by the heavy end and make the lighter end change direction. Which is easier? Placing the engine's weight closer to the middle of the car allows the car to change direction more easily for the same reason.
