how common is it?

Still pretty common on the Islands - read somewhere that over 10% of homes are multi generational. Even on the mainland, when I was younger I lived with my Tutu and cousins as it was expected/customary

Multigenerational homes is fairly common. Housing in Hawaii is pricey so multiple families tend to stay under one roof in order to save money.Source(s): Resident of Hawaii.
