The movie The Fly: why did the teleportation device merge the DNA of the fly with the scientist?

If a teleportation device teleports, then why did it not teleport the scientist and the fly as two separate entities from one pod to the other? Why did the teleportation device merge their DNA together?

The transporter was programed to teleport one object. when it found two life forms in the pod, it corrected the error by turning them into one. It works on a molecular level so it merged them down to the DNA

Because the teleporter was breaking the matter down, sending the signal to the other teleporter and rebuilding the molecules. There was a malfunction and the information got crossed.

Because then there would be no story to tell.

Horror movies don't have to really make any scientific sense.
