You could always buy the PC port, or PSP, Vita, PS3, or Switch ports, if you own those systems, and probably other systems that I'm forgetting about.

Then you won't have to worry about a PS1 memory card.

Otherwise, sure, you can play it and keep your system on the entire time, but hope you don't ever see a GAME OVER, because without a save state, you're starting over.

Yes, it's POSSIBLE to complete FF VII without a memory card...

HOWEVER, you would need to keep your PS1 on for the ENTIRE TIME.  This means that you'll have to keep the game running AT LEAST DAYS if you're planning to complete it as most players who stuck to the story & didn't grind that much were able to complete the game in roughly 40 hours.

If you're only planning to play for a few hours at a time, you'll either need to pick up a memory card...  or expect to keep your PS1 on for weeks or even months for this, god forbid that you experience a power outage that entire time (as that would wipe out all your unsaved progress).

If you're not willing to make that commitment, you might want to pick up a copy for PC or even the Switch so you can save & quit whenever you need to.
