Can I use laundry detergent to clean the carpet?

While the vacuum gets free dirt, it does not really clean the carpet fibers themselves. Laundry detergent is created to clean multiple types of fabric, from clothing to carpeting. The detergent will truly wash the carpet, starting it fresh and free of trash.

Not wise. Hire a Rug Doctor and buy the correct chemical. That way the results will be worthwhile.

rofl.  Shout [laundry] and Resolve [carpet] cleaners were same product in two different bottles.  The problem with more cleaners than those is how to get the resulting water out of the carpet.  This is what a carpet cleaning machine does ... removes the water after use.  A shop vac will likely accomplish the same.  Do NOT use an ordinary vacuum -- not safe to collect water [exception -- Rainbow vacuum would be ok and start with little water in it, mmmhuh?]  and with ordinary laundry D you have the issue of how much to use ... Hint:  not much per gallon.  the washing machine holds several gallons of water ...   --grampa
