Well there weren't 50 states at the time.

The Confederate states were: Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas, Tennessee, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia.  The Union consisted of all the rest of the territory that now makes up the continental United States (Alaska and Hawaii were not yet owned by the US).  The parts which were actual states included everything in the Northeast and around the Great Lakes as well as California, Oregon, and Kansas (the latter admitted in January of 1861 during the secession crisis).   There were two states admitted during the Civil War: West Virginia was formed out of the 33 westernmost counties of Virginia.  They had counter-seceded from that state, rejoined the Union, and were made their own state in 1863.  Nevada was admitted in 1864 in part to help Republicans win the upcoming Presidential election.

Well no, it wasn't twenty-five a side - mainly because there were only thirty-four states at the time. There weren't fifty states until 1959.

Eleven states joined the Confederacy. Twenty-three (including California) were Union states - some of them with varying degrees of reluctance. Four slave states declined to secede, for example.

Several states provided troops to fight on both sides.

SECESSION. By February 1861, seven Southern states had seceded. On February 4 of that year, representatives from South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia and Louisiana met in Montgomery, Alabama, with representatives from Texas arriving later, to form the Confederate States of America.

The Union included the states of Maine, New York, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kansas, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, California, Nevada, and Oregon.

Despite their acceptance of slavery, Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, and Missouri did not join the Confederacy. Although divided in their loyalties, a combination of political maneuvering and Union military pressure kept these states from seceding.

33 states  In   1860,   just before the Civil War, there were a total of 33 states.

West (by G*D) Virginia was the only state created and accepted by the Union, Admitted to the Union    June 20, 1863

There weren't 50 states at the time. Only 35, plus 10 organised territories, with West Virginia and Nevada becoming states during the strife.
