Why are cigarettes, alcohol, & fattening foods legal if they are the leading causes of cancer?

Because it's NOT THE ROLE of government (any government, not just the US) to LEGISLATE PUBLIC MORALITY. Congress made that mistake once, with Prohibition- which was a colossal failure. We are still dealing with the effects of Prohibition nearly a century after it was finally repealed. Prohibition led to the birth of the organized crime movement in the US, among its other failings. The worst part about it, though, was that it DIDN'T STOP people from drinking and buying alcohol. They just took their activities underground, that's all- and states and cities lost a huge source of tax revenue because of this.

People will do what they want to do with their lives, and they should be permitted to make their own choices. The US government isn't, and shouldn't be, standing in loco parentis to the citizens of this country.

Because people wish to retain what they imagine to be freedom of choice to take recreational drugs including alcohol, tobacco, weed etc. Because they like it, they somehow think it magics-away the problem; but they're still smoking a bonfire of carcinogens. Addictive drugs continue to be sold because they make more money for the government than they lose. Using them turns 'rebels' into the most sheep-like people of all.

I suppose the reason cigarettes, alcohol, and fattening foods are  legal is because they have NOT been proven to be the leading cause of cancer.

No one really knows what causes a cancer to develop. All they know that, when a cell fails to die at its appointed time and be replaced by a new, healthy cell, that cell begins mutating and begins infecting healthy cells elsewhere in the body., and cancer is the result. They don't know what CAUSES a cell to behave in that manner.

The leading causes? There are more than 200 types of cancer. Nobody knows what causes most cancers.

Smoking is linked to a handful of cancer types. It’s known to be a major cause of lung cancers, and is a risk factor for cancers of the mouth, nose and sinuses; larynx, stomach, pancreas, kidney, bladder and liver; cervical and oesophageal cancer and myeloid leukaemia.

Alcohol is a risk factor for seven types of cancer: mouth cancer, pharyngeal cancer, oesophageal cancer, laryngeal  cancer, breast cancer, bowel cancer and liver cancer.

Obesity is a risk factor for 13 types of cancer: Breast (after the menopause), bowel, womb, oesophageal,  pancreatic, kidney, liver, upper stomach, gallbladder, ovarian, thyroid, myeloma and meningioma (a type of brain tumour).

*Nobody knows what causes most cancers*

Note: a risk factor is not a cause; it is something that statistically increases your risk.

Example: insurance companies regard 'being male' as a risk factor for having a car crash. Being male doesn't actually cause car crashes, it simply increases the statistical risk.

Because people are just stupid enough to buy them.

Because most of us believe in freedom.  Why don't you?

Because we have the freedom to choose what we do with ourselves. The government is not one to control what choices you make regarding your personal health. If you want to smoke, drink and eat fattening foods, you have every right to do that but you'll pay for it later on.

Government makes money off of them. Simple.
