Apart from the first and last letters of Lincoln and London, what could make anybody think of any connection? There is a city in England called Lincoln, whose cathedral has been in existence for far longer than the USA has been in existence. The folk hero, Robin Hood, wore 'Lincoln Green' clothing. In general names which are shared between Britain and the USA are far older in Britain than in the USA, as a short glance at history will make logical.

Both London and Lincoln trace their names back to Roman times about 1900 years ago. The Romans called them Londinium and Lindum Colonia.

If an English person actually told you that then they were having you on.

London existed LONG before the US was established let alone Lincoln born. It would have had to have been known under a different name prior to Lincoln, and why would a British city be renamed to honour an American president?

London was named 'Londonium' by the Romans around 1700 years before Lincoln was born.
