How do I overwinter my poinsettia?

I was told to cut a poinsietta back, and set it in a dark closet.  Water it to the point that it won't dry out and die, but sort of let it hibernate.  Bring it out into the light  around Halloween, and start coaxing it to grow again by adding plant food and a flower fertilizer.  Maybe set it under a "grow light".  It should start to pick up in Nov., and hopefully it will bloom again in Dec. I've never tried it, but I'm known people who raised a second growth like that.
