Probably too dark but I love Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy and thought he did an excellent job, glad I own them.

I doubt it, The Beatles wanted to make an on screen musical adaptation of Lord of the rings directed by Stanley Kubrick which he declined,  They approached  Tolkien and asked him to sell the rights of LOTR  to them but he refused without any negotiation, He was very much a traditionalist so i don't think he would have enjoyed Jacksons adaptation either.

Simon Tolkien (his grandson) said he wouldn't have enjoyed them. The trilogy was not what Tolkien imagined.
