    You need to be more specific about the experiment. In many cases no variables are in need of being controlled. However, if the experiment is trying to explain something specific certain variables will need to be controlled if it is believed that those variables will bias results and not truly answer the question. As an example, if you were wanting to see how the amount of water on a certain plant species affects plant growth you would vary the amount of water to get your results but you would want to make sure to control the amount of sunlight, soil type, nutrients, and other environmental factors that could influence plant growth.
