     Let x be the number of people on the train.

     x - 19 + 17 = 63

     x = 65

     There were 65 people on the train.

    63-17+19 = 65 <<<

    To check: 65-19 = 46

    46 + 17 = 63

    At start, x were on the train. Then 19 got of leaving x-19 on the train. Then 17

    got on, leaving x-2 = 63 on the train. So x = 65.

    If 19 people got off but then 17 people got on, that's the same as if only 2 people got off.

    Add back the 2 people and you have 65 that were on the train to begin with.

    Answer:

    65

    N +19 – 17 = 63
