will hydrogen gas and Oxygen gas form water simply by contact?

if you had a tank and purged it's gases then filled it with 1 part Oxygen and 2 parts Hydrogen, would you eventually end up with a tank of water?

    the reaction has a high activation energy barrier that would not generally lead to it happening spontaneously at low temperatures.  That is, neither phase is the thermodynamically stable phase for the conditions but the reaction will not happen except by random chance, and random chance will be small at low temperatures. In effect, temperature affects what proportion of molecules in the mix can ever attain the necessary energy to cause a reaction to proceed.  Raising temperature will increase those odds considerably.

    If you have infinite time to wait, the reaction will occur at some point.  Just a matter of when.

    Once it starts, though, it will be explosive, so I don't think you will have a tank at the end either way.  You will make steam, not liquid or solid water, if the reaction commences.

    Not at normal temperatures. You need a spark to start the process. Hydrogen will react with oxygen at 500 C.

  • No.  You need to add energy to the system in order to cause a bond to happen.  Hydrogen and Oxygen are both diatomic molecules.  H isn't just H, it's H2.  O isn't just O, it's O2

    2 H2  +  O2 = 2 H2O

    Once you create the initial molecules, enough energy is released in the form of heat to continue the reaction.
