How did old movies still were tense and thrilling without using much violence or cussing?

Movies since the 1960s used more blood nudity or cussing to gain more emotions, shock, to make the film more intense. But movies from the 1950s and before didn't use all of that. They may of said occasionally h*ll or d*mn, & show some blood on screen. But they were able to keep the movie entertaining without going all R rated.

In many cases they used people who could act.  Few pictures today do so.  Sorry Seth Rogan

Because they had really good writers that could make the movies that way.

They had to adapt to the way society had changed. If they stayed with the tame stuff then people would stop watching as their day to day life would be more thrilling than what was shown in movies.
