150 years ago would anyone really have known if farmers on the Canada USA border encroached on each other’s land and stole extra acreage ?

There are people with landholdings on both sides of the border.

Sort of.  When William Ogilvie figured out where the border was between Alaska, and the Yukon in the late 1800's, through mountains, and virgin wilderness, he was at worst 150' out.  Not bad in the days before GPS in thick forest!   People might not have been totally accurate then, but, they had a pretty good idea.  There are places that cross borders, including some buildings, but, not by much anywhere.
