The British and the French actually tried to keep it afloat up unit WWI. It was the simple fact that the Ottoman Empire joined the Central Powers in WWI. That left them wide open for assault by the Russians and the British. When the Central Powers lost the war the the Turks forfeited their empire. The French and the British proceeded to break it up into "spheres of influence". The Turks literally had their hands full keeping Turkey proper intact. In 1922 they had a war with Greeks over the western portion of the country. Which up until 1922 had a large Greek minority. Izmir was burned to the ground, the British Fleet transported over a million ethnic Greeks from Turkey to Greece and over 200,000 ethnic Turks from Greece to Turkey.

The British and French tried to prop it up in the 1854 Crimean War.

World War I destroyed it as it was already falling apart. No single nation can take credit. More credit goes to the people of the individual territories that had been ruled over.

The Ottomans were the architects of their own destruction, clinging to medieval practices into the 20th century

It fell at the end of WW1 because the Turks supported Germany and Austria.   Germany and Austria lost the war which led to the fall of the Ottoman Empire.  Britain and France took the Ottoman possessions in the Middle East.
