Electrical panel?

If your using a 3 phase panel to wire something up, and the panel is rated for 480v. If I run two of the phases to some equipment. Whatever it may be. What would be the total voltage of the two phases? Would it be 480 + 480 = 960?

I doubt very much that you have a 480V system and/or that it is three phase unless you are in a huge industrial building.

If you were you would know about three phase and 480 volts.

If you are in the USA you probably have 110/220 V system. The phases are 180 out of phase and when you connect across the hots you get 220 VAC @ 60 Hz.

If you are in the UK or elsewhere you get elsewhere volts and maybe 50Hz.

The 480V panel means the spacing is made for 480V.

If something is rated for 480 volts means that it can cope with 480 volts without issue.  In equipment installed maybe only for a 120-volt system.

The supply voltage can be quite different to the rated voltage.

In any three-phase system the ratio between the phase voltage and line voltage is a factor of Root 3.   or multiply the phase to a neutral voltage by 1.414.

Or divide the line to line voltage by .707.

I will make an assumption or two here.  First, you are actually supplying the 480 Volt panel with 480 volts three phase 4 wire supply.  Second that you know what you are doing in operating on a 480 volt panel.

When you extend two of the three phases to another panel or load, this in effect is a single phase system and will function as a single phase system in all respects with one exception.  The voltage to ground will be 277 volts not 240 volts.

    Hope this helps

The panel is rated for 480V 3 phase systems. The phase to phase voltages are 480V and the phase to neutral / ground voltages are 277V

"the panel is rated for 480V" does not mean

    the mains voltage is 480V

there is no such 480V mains anywhere in the world

a 120V single phase line will give 120X1.732=208V

three phase voltage between two lines

a 240V single phase line will give 240X1.732=415V

three phase voltage between two lines

ANY PHASE TO PHASE VOLTAGE IS 480V  !!!

what is the phase voltage, which is NOT the panel rating?

If it is 480 volts per phase, then phase-phase voltage is 480√3 which is 830 volts

    others:

    120√3 = 208

    240√3 = 415
