Virginia is definately the closest state to the United States Capitol.
The border is just the other side of the Potomac River just 3 miles to where the Pentagon Building is.
and Maryland is the next closest state to the United States Capitol building. Tuxedo is 6 miles to the North East on the other side of the Anacostia River.

Clearly not the states which do not know how to spell 'capital' when applied to a city.

The "Capitol" (spelled with one "A" and one "O") refers to the building where the government of the United States meets. The "capital" (spelled with two "A"s) refers to the city where the Capitol Building and the White House are located - Washington, D.C.
Washington, D.C. was built on land ceded to the federal government to create the capital district. The land came from the state of Maryland. The state of Virginia gave some of its territory as well, but that section of the city was not developed as quickly and eventually Virginia asked for their territory to be returned. The US government granted that request.
Washington, D.C. shares about 65 percent of its border with the state of Maryland, but as the crow flies, the actual Capitol Building is slightly closer to Virginia.
