They can tell as they are all coded and they know where the ones are sent to or registered at. ALL have a different number assigned and just like a ISP number.. they can be traced..

The ticket itself will print out the name of the store the ticket was purchased from. If it was purchased from a store chain (like Casey's, for example), it may include the store number as well to provide a unique name so the state's lottery commission knows the exact store that sold the ticket.
The ticket doesn't provide the exact location of the store, but you can likely figure it out by knowing the store's name & what state it's located in.
