What is the best way to help your child learn their second language?

So my child is half Japanese and half American and we live in America. Her dad isn’t around anymore so she can’t rely on him to teach her Japanese. How can I help her learn Japanese in the easiest, less stressful way possible?

Not knowing whether you speak Japanese, it's hard to answer.

    Hire a japanese nanny/baby-sitter

Unless your own Japanese is at a very high level indeed, don't speak Japanese routinely to your daughter. It's OK to use short sentences where you KNOW every word is accurate, but only native speakers can supply the necessary automatic command of the correct language structure.

You would do much better to speak to her almost exclusively in English, but use occasional Japanese short phrases just so she realises Japanese isn't something to use only outside the home. Ask around for a good Japanese tutor or home help, and let them talk to your child as much as possible.

You could also consider sending her to a Japanese-language play group.

A teacher could help her, or a student who learns Japanese? ( this last one could be less expensive than a professional).

Speak Japanese at home and English when she’s out in public.
