Cotton for sure.  Bamboo if you can afford it.

Cotton but how thick a sock you want depends on the activity & climate it's done in.

The simple answer is cotton. It's gentle with the skin and non-allergic. It gives you maximum comfort. No skin problems. Although it's not as durable as Nylon socks.

By no means plastic, nylon, polyester. Cotton,it's breathable, washable and durable, so it is the most common fiber in socks.

For dress, polyester or a blend.

    For sports, cotton.

For winter - wool or other animal material.

It depends. I find I like a blend, such as mostly cotton with a little stretch or wool with a little something else for stretch and durability. Basically, natural fibers with a tad of synthetic. I wouldn't mind 100% cashmere socks for the winter though.
