Why do British authors kill off 90% of the popular side characters in the finale? May contain spoilers?

Think about it. Lord of the Rings. The Chronicles of Prydain. Harry Potter. The Chronicles of Narnia. They all have one thing in common. The final book usually features a huge battle where most of the recurring characters get killed. If they are not the protagonist, the deuteragonist or the tritagonist, there's an excellent chance they're a goner.
