About 70 years. Amazing Grace was first published in 1779. It was sung with various tunes until the words were joined with "New Britain", the melody most currently associated with it in 1847. Since 1954, when an organ instrumental of "New Britain" became a best-seller, "Amazing Grace" has been associated with funerals and memorial services.

Oh, hundreds, mate. Thousands, even. Yes, "Amazing Grace" has been harmonized at memorial services since before the dawn of civilization. Which is, if you think about it, hundreds of years and even more decades ago. Hope his helped.

It seems to be an american thing. It is a shame that it is always used at funerals because it means we cannot enjoy it at normal events. It is a nice song. I do not know when it started being used.
I am waiting for somebody to ban the song and say it is offensive, the way everything else is being banned, because it was written by the white captain of a slave ship, and everything to do with slavery is being banned right now.
