How to know when investing in shares that the company has a small or acceptable debt?

    When you go to a stocks page on yahoo finance, click on "statistics" for that stock. Their debt should be listed near the bottom left column. Id consider debt fine or bad based on the size of the business.

    Read the various financial reports. 

    But the thing to remember is that most companies have substantial debt. It's their ability to manage the debt that really matters.
