If members of a store’s rewards program spend more money than non-members, is that proof that members spend more after signing up?

    Possibly. Or that people who like rewards programs are those that spend more in the first place.

    Not necessarily. You need to prove causality. Do customers spend more because they signed up to become members, or do customers sign up to become members because they spend more?
