Probably more advanced than a lot of men of his era. He mourned the loss of one son deeply and despite strong feelings against it supported his eldest's desire to join the Union Army in the waning days of the Civil War. The guy had a mentally ill wife and a lot of family problems.

I don't know that he had a view on it.

The issue didn't really become prominent until after the Civil War.  He was already dead by then.
