Why do older dogs tend to have a reddish, almost blood-colored patch of fur around the bottom of their eyes?

Tear stains, lots of dogs have this problem.  It shows up much worse on white dogs.

Tear stains, mostly. Also, dog hair/fur is thinner around the eye region in general, for many dogs.

Its tear stains..  And it has nothing to do with a dogs age.    Diet and allergies can contribute to the staining.
