    Yellow stand out better underwater

Because household sponges are most stereotypically yellow.  They CAN be any color, but yellow is the stereotype.  And since the joke is that he looks like a household sponge instead of a sea sponge (which is a real animal but looks nothing like a household sponge), they chose that color.

Eh...the sponges my wife uses are yellow.  Obviously there are two races of sponges...at least two.

Just to break that monotony of the cool colors (i.e blue, green, violet etc.)of the underwater scenes in the show so that the colors look more diverse, different, vivid and colorful

In short, yellow in middle of blue colors looks better than green in middle of the blue sea
