How can you burn incense sticks so you don't get that burnt smell or create toxic VOCs?

I bought some natural incense sticks, but I'm not a fan of the burning smell they release and I want to use them in a way that is safer for regular use. Could I crush them and mix with oil in an oil burner? Do you think that would work and the scent would be strong enough?

Update:

Also, I already have a diffuser. I just like the smell on incense sometimes- especially in winter.

Burn a better quality incense (Japanese are usually higher quality) or burn a low smoke variety; again the Japanese companies such as shoyeido or Nippon Kodo make these.

Source(s): I just happen to use them.
