Why is masochism a disorder?

I mean doesn't really seem like one, embracing suffering is a good thing it means you grew as a person & learned to not let life beat you down mentally.

Update:

If anything letting life beat you down is a disorder.

One does not "embrace" suffering they work through it to get past it.

It doesn't depend on the cause but on the effect. For example, if you are a gay it is not disorder because you do not threaten any powerless person. But if you are pedophile it is a serous disorder even if - from medical viewpoint - it can be only a form of sexual preference.
