Do you believe mankind could create enough nuclear heating elements, put them in orbit, and replace our own sun?

Sun burns out and we turn the entire planet earth into a space ship

Our sun is going to continue in its fairly uniform "main stage" of life for most of another billion years or so.

In that amount of time the nuclear elements in the earth (mainly uranium and thorium) are also going to degrade significantly.

Besides, we cannot get to enough of these elements, now or in the future, to do anything close to what you suggest.

    Two other problems:

    - it is not possible for humans to "decouple" the earth from the sun's gravity.

    - the sun will enter a 'red giant' stage and swallow up Mercury, Venus and the Earth (perhaps Mars also).

Not really, since the earth will be consumed by the sun in the sun's dying epoch red giant phase.  But if humanity lasts a few billion more years, then I imagine it will be possible to terraform Mars (which may escape the sun's red giant phase) or one of the moons of jupiter or saturn.   If humanity last a few more billion years after that, the remnants of mercury, venus or the earth my be useful to terraform the suns white dwarf phase.  But there is zero chance humans will be around to care.

The nuclear furnace within the sun contains more mass than there is in the entire Earth -- that sort of presents a problem .

Who would pay for the cost of energy to replace the energy of the sun, in which mankind get it free in every second of our lives.

    No.

And forget about it. The sun won't "burn out" for a billion years. Long after all humans and our artifacts have fossilized then subducted deep into the mantle.

  • I think we should fear our nuclear future and worry more about how we screwed up this virus that is going to kill many of mankind in the next year or so.  Replacing the sun is a pipe dream it is not going to happen and who is going to spend the money to try to come up with such an object.  Mankind can't get along now.  Think about it.

    No.

Plus, the Earth will cease to be habitable long before the Sun expands into a red giant and destroys the Earth.

Earth already IS a space ship for threat 4.5 Billion years. You state the obvious. No. Right now we cannot build a continuous nuclear  fusion reactor to replace the Sun. The human species may well go extinct in the next thousand years because of the escalating pandemic of willful ignorance and xenophobia and violence as Trump keeps dividing the USA and the world.

The fatality rate from covid 19 in the United States has been hovering around 6% for months, but is slowly increasing with the recent spikes in many states, including Oklahoma. I will not be at all surprised that it might rise to a 10% mortality rate in the United States by November or December. At that point the pandemic will have decimated the United States because of the incompetence and denial of the Trump administration.

Very likely the Supreme Court will have to decide on January 3 who will be inaugurated on January 20, 2021. Biden will NOT be the oldest president. Reagan turned 80 years old 9 days before he was inaugurated for his first term in January 1981. Biden does NOT have dementia. He has a speech impediment. Trump obviously has Alzheimer's syndrome. He already was an intermittently explosive narcissist who has been in constant state of rage until the last few days.. Now he is going through all the stages of grief because representative democracy in the USA IS DYING because of his incompetence.
