Could you adopt a live elephant or gorilla from a zoo?

Yes, but you can only give the zoo money for the adoption but you won't be able to take the animals home. Zoos do sell surplus animals to animal dealers, but they won't sell the animals to the general public.

You'll have to become a licensed zoo yourself before anyone would even talk to you.

Kind of. You can adopt it in the sense that you pay the zoo a certain amount of money per month and the zoo will give you a certificate that says you adopted that animal. If you give enough money, the zoo might even put up a plaque with your name on it. In college, our dorm floor adopted a rhesus monkey and the zoo put up a plaque with our dorm name, floor, and university.

You can’t bring it home or feed it whatever you want at the zoo.

I guess it’s more like sponsoring the animal than adopting it.
